DuPont Nomex Insulation Paper – The Gold Standard and Application Practices in Global Electrical Insulation

Since its introduction in the 1960s, DuPont Nomex insulation paper has become the preferred insulation material for manufacturers of transformers, generators, motors and other electrical equipment worldwide to optimize product performance, improve reliability and extend service life. For nearly 50 years, countless engineering practices have demonstrated the unique value of Nomex insulation paper—it is not just a material brand, but represents the gold standard in electrical insulation.

1. Why Global Manufacturers Trust Nomex Insulation Paper

The ability of Nomex insulation paper to maintain its leading position in the competitive electrical insulation material market stems from its unique combination of eight key performance dimensions: inherent dielectric strength, mechanical toughness, thermal stability, chemical compatibility, radiation resistance, flame retardancy, moisture resistance and low-temperature performance. This performance combination far exceeds competing products, enabling it to meet virtually any electrical insulation requirement.

Overload Capacity and Reliability: In transformer and motor applications, the excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength of Nomex insulation paper endow equipment with greater overload tolerance. For traction transformers, adopting Nomex insulation systems combined with temperature rise calculations and cooling system optimization enables equipment to achieve 133% overload capacity while reducing product size. Hyundai faced the challenge of generating maximum power from minimal and lightweight equipment when designing mobile transformers—Nomex insulation paper, with its higher efficiency and weight reduction capabilities, provided the solution.

Moisture Protection: At 95% relative humidity, Nomex insulation paper retains 90% of its dielectric strength compared to completely dry conditions, while many mechanical properties are actually improved. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for long-term stable operation in humid environments such as coastal areas, water treatment facilities and outdoor applications.

2. Core Application Areas and Success Stories

Power Transformers and Distribution Equipment

Nomex insulation paper is widely used in both liquid-immersed and dry-type transformers, covering various equipment types including liquid-immersed distribution transformers, power and distribution transformers, pole-mounted, pad-mounted and submersible transformers. Product series range from the 300 Series (less demanding electrical applications) to the 900 Series (high reliability requirements), including Nomex 993 and 994 pressboards and Nomex wet pressboard for formed parts. Through the unique combination of thermal and mechanical properties of Nomex insulation materials, it helps maximize overload capacity and power density, maintaining power supply at critical moments even under the most extreme operating conditions.

Yunnan Transformer Company selected Nomex paper for use in hybrid insulation systems because it provides the thermal stability, mechanical strength and proven overload capacity required to meet the increasing reliability demands being placed on its power equipment.

Rotating Machines (Generators and Motors)

Nomex insulation paper covers a wide range of rotating machinery applications including inverter duty motors, large industrial motors for mills and mining, wind generators, hydro-alternators and turbo-generators. Brithinee Electric in the United States has used Nomex insulation paper exclusively for motor repair services since the 1980s, serving water and sewage pump motor repairs for hundreds of communities in Southern California (with a population exceeding 19 million), as well as reconditioning and rewinding over 3,000 of the approximately 21,000 locomotive motors in the United States. The company maintains a proud record of zero winding failures during the one-year warranty period after motor repair. According to Don Brithinee, using Nomex allows their repairs to meet or exceed the original manufacturer‘s performance levels, achieved in 99% of repaired motors. Wind turbine manufacturers have also achieved safer and more powerful wind generators through the proven performance of Nomex insulation materials under extreme conditions, reducing size and weight while lowering overhead costs without sacrificing performance and safety.

New Energy and Electric Vehicles

As the global energy transition accelerates, the application of Nomex insulation paper has extended to new energy equipment and hybrid electric vehicles. From transformers and generators to wind turbine systems and hybrid electric vehicles, all manufacturers have improved the integrity and performance of their products by using Nomex insulation paper. In EV drive motors, Nomex insulation paper withstands high temperatures and electromagnetic interference from frequent charge/discharge cycles, improving motor efficiency and lifespan. In high-voltage battery modules, Nomex materials serve as interlayer insulation, preventing short circuits and isolating battery heat, providing reliable insulation protection for battery systems.

Motor Repair and Refurbishment

Beyond new equipment manufacturing, Nomex insulation paper also plays an important role in motor repair and refurbishment. Brithinee Electric‘s experience demonstrates that motors rewound and repaired with Nomex insulation paper can meet or exceed original performance levels with significantly extended service life. As Wally Brithinee commented: “Nomex plays a huge role in helping us meet this goal. We will not flinch.”

3. Processing and Installation Considerations in Applications

In practical applications, the processing quality of Nomex insulation paper directly affects the overall performance of the insulation system. Key processing and installation considerations include:

Cutting and Die-Cutting: Nomex insulation paper can be processed by die-cutting, laser cutting or water jet cutting. Die-cutting is suitable for high-volume production with tolerances of ±0.05mm; laser cutting has no tooling costs, supports complex contours and rapid prototyping with minimum tolerances of ±0.01mm. Cutting direction should be perpendicular to fiber orientation to enhance tear strength.

Bending and Forming: Nomex insulation paper offers good flexibility, with thinner grades easily bendable and foldable, suitable for applications requiring conformability to irregular shapes such as coil and slot insulation. For complex 3D structures, thermoforming or vacuum forming processes can be used to produce insulation formed parts.

Lamination and Bonding: Nomex insulation paper can be laminated with polyester film to produce NM or NMN composite insulation materials. These composites serve as slot insulation and phase insulation in motors, and as interlayer insulation in transformers, combining Nomex‘s temperature resistance with polyester film’s mechanical strength.

Adhesive Backing: Some applications require adhesive backing on Nomex insulation paper for easier installation. Single-sided or double-sided adhesive backing is available, supporting hot-melt adhesives, solvent-based adhesives and specialty double-sided tapes from brands such as 3M, Nitto and Sony, offering strong adhesion with excellent temperature and weather resistance.

Quality Inspection: After processing, finished products should be inspected using withstand voltage testers and vision measurement systems. ISO 9001-certified processing suppliers can provide material test reports and ROHS/UL certification documents to ensure compliance with international standards.

4. Localization and Supply Chain Options

For a long time, the Nomex insulation paper market has been dominated by DuPont products. With breakthroughs in domestic aramid paper technology, China’s Minshida innovation team began aramid paper research and development in 2003, completed the first 500-ton annual production line in 2007, and achieved aviation sector application of domestic aramid paper in 2009, making China the second country in the world capable of producing aramid paper. Since then, related products have been supplied to international companies, achieving thousand-ton-level aramid paper industrial production, with compact structural products developed, increasing tensile strength by 68%-270%.

Currently, available Nomex insulation paper options include:

  • Imported Nomex Paper (DuPont): High density, tear-resistant, suitable for high-frequency motor insulation and high-precision processing scenarios

  • Domestic Nomex Paper (Minshida, etc.): Cost-effective option, shorter delivery lead times, approximately 30% cost reduction, compatible with conventional electrical insulation requirements

Users can make appropriate choices between these options based on specific application requirements, precision levels and budget considerations.
